Levelling or Equalising Acid dyes. These require strong acid (usually Sulphuric Acid), pH 2.5-3.0, to provide good dyebath exhaustion. They are usually applied from a bath set at below 60C containing 3-5% Sulphuric Acid and Glaubers Salt and dyed at the boil for 45 minutes. Leveling is improved with the addition of larger amounts of Sulphuric Acid. They have poor fastness to light, washing, milling and other wet processes, but have good leveling/migration properties. These dyes are used for dress fabrics, carpet yarns and other materials where bright colours and the highest degree of levelness and penetration are required. They are widely used for the fashion colour trade. Some of these dyes are suitable for wool dyeing with Formic Acid at a pH=4 to give improved levelness with adequate exhaustion.
