Milling Acid dyes. These are applied from a weakly acid bath (usually Acetic Acid, Ammonium Sulphate or Ammonium Acetate), pH 4.5-5.0. They have good fastness to light, washing, etc., but usually have poor levelling or migrating properties. Often used for hosiery, knitting yarns and loose wool (for tweeds) due to their good fastness properties to washing and milling. They are applied from a dyebath set below 50°C with Glaubers Salt and Acetic Acid and dyed at the boil for 20-30 minutes.

(c) Neutral Dyeing or Super Milling Acid dyes. These have good fastness to washing etc. These have better wet fastness than the Milling types and because of their poor migration properties the pH of the dyebath must be carefully controlled between 5.5 and 8.5. The temperature must be raised slowly to ensure level dyeing. A retarding agent should be used to ensure initial uniform dye uptake by the fibre. They are applied from a bath set below 60C with 2-5% Ammonium Acetate or Ammonium Sulphate and dyed at the boil for 45 minutes. The ammonium salts decompose as the temperature increases and releases ammonia to the atmosphere thereby reducing the pH.
